NCU When Stillness Gets Misread

I’ve been thinking about how easily stillness gets misread.

There was a time when people thought I was stuck-up. I’ve been called reserved and accused of acting aloof, but that’s not completely accurate.

The truth is much less dramatic.

I think slowly.

When someone says something, I don’t always have an immediate response. I need time to process what was said, how it landed, and what I actually think about it. By the time I’ve sorted it out internally, the conversation has usually moved on.

From the outside, that can look like distance, but from the inside, it’s just processing.

When my stillness is misinterpreted, it doesn’t just stay external. If someone assumes I’m stuck or not contributing, I might start doubting myself and my abilities.

I think:

Maybe I should be quicker.
Maybe I should speak more confidently.
Maybe I should have something more impressive to say.

And when I don’t, I question whether I have anything of value to offer at all.

That’s the part we don’t talk about.

The decisions that have actually fit my life came from slower processing. From sitting with something longer than other people might be comfortable with. From making pros and cons lists and letting things settle.

They didn’t look impressive.
They didn’t look fast.
They looked quiet.

But they were steady.

Maybe stillness isn’t stuck, and maybe some of us just think in layers.
Maybe the pause isn’t a problem to solve.

Maybe it’s orientation.

If you’ve been feeling behind because you’re not moving as quickly as everyone else seems to be, I wonder if you’re actually just processing.

And that’s not nothing.

Reflective question:
Where in your life might you be mislabeling processing as being stuck?

If you need a space to process without being rushed, I offer one-to-one clarity conversations. You can reply to this email if you’d like to talk.
